We marked all of the worksheets that needed to be marked and I handed them back so you could use them to help you study for Monday's unit exam. I also really want to stress that cue cards can be very helpful in learning terms.

Thursday, September 28, 2006

English 20-1 blocks one and three

Today you are to hand in "Did I Miss Anything?" questions and then I am going to give you and go over your major poetry unit assignment. I have placed it below for those who were not here:

ORAL PRESENTATION ON AN IMPORTANT/GREAT POET

Each of the following English, American, and Canadian poets has left behind a significant body of work and been praised for the integrity of his/her work..

Getting started

Find a poem of up to two pages that you like by one of the poets presented on the following page and then “claim” that poet (first-come, first-serve; one student per poet), or pick your poet first and then find a poem that you like.
Do some research on the life of the poet, and see if there is any critical information about the poem.
Using poster paper (you supply) create a visual in which you include and tie together the dominant images in the poem and the following (and also identify); The poet, the poem, literary devices used, rhyme scheme. This will be a strong visual project with simple tie-ins to information and definitions. You can think of this as a web, a mind map, or a concept map.
Give me your poem for transparency-making purposes.
Go over what you will say about the poem and poet as per presentation instructions below.

The Actual Presentation

Introduce your poet. Tell about him or her.
Introduce the poem – background, allusions, vocabulary, ideas to watch for.
Read the poem to the class.
The reading must assist the listener in understanding the poem. In other words, the reading must help interpret the poem for the listener.
Comment on and / or analyze the poem.
What is it about?
What does it say, at a literal, surface level? What is the ‘dramatic situation that takes place?
What does it mean? What idea is it dealing with at a deeper, figurative (or metaphorical) level?
How does it convey its meaning? Explore the details of its diction, its imagery and metaphors, and the pattern of organization, the movement, the poem follows from its beginning to its end
What are its best features?
Does it work? Is it successful?
Why do you like the poem?

Question / response period: involving teacher and class.

Why do people react in a morally incorrect way in certain situations?
What is meant by “dehumanization”?
How dies dehumanization affect those who are being dehumanized?
How does dehumanization affect those in charge?

We discussed these as a class. You are to keep these in an accessible place as they will tie in to your next essay. In addition to this, we bagan our short story unit today. The Soviet Union. We took notes on important information about dictatorship (pages 67 and 68 in your text: "The Rise of Dictatorship in the Soviet Union"). Keep in mind that the most powerful dictatorship that has ever existed was the communist government that created the Soviet Union. (today, only Cuba, China and North Korea are still Communist).
YOu were assigned to do A-16 and were given the accompanying readings that go with it on the Soviet Union. I also gave you the handouts "Diagram of the Structure of the Soviet Communist Party" and "Reading 8: Stalin: The Politics of Terror). These are to be read and highlighted on your own. I will give you time today to work on A-16. YOu should be able to do the exercises by tomorrow's class.

Keep in mind that this is a major assignment and I expect a piece of writing that has been outlined, written, revised and repaired (in other words... perfection would be good). In other words, wise use of time is a must. I will be using this essay for discussion during the one-on-one interviews that I will hold with each one of you in the near future (in other words - you'll have to defend and explain what you've written, not just look for a mark).

Today, you are going to create a continuum placing your values, by number (from your opinion survey) on the line. after you have finished this (and I expect a clean, neat job!!!) You are to finish the second side of the page on "Issues and Values". If you are confused about continuums (activity above) look at step 4 on the back page of the "Issues and Values" worksheet. This one is too small to place ALL of your opinions from your opinion survey. This is why you are creating a continuum.
