English 20-1 blocks one and three
We are going to analyse "The Unknown Citizen" (questions are due today). After this, we will look at a poem entitled "Hams" and then I want to go over Semi-colons with you.
English 30-1 block three
You were to have read "Shining Houses" as homework. You will be placed in pairs to answer a series of questions relating to this story. Use your time wisely. I have posted the questions below:
Short Story: “Shining Houses”

INSTRUCTIONS: READ the short story: “Shining Houses”, then answer the following questions.
1. Describe Mrs. Fullerton (create a character sketch)
2. Describe Mary (create a character sketch)
3. In ten sentences, summarize the short story
4. What is the main conflict in this story?
5. What other conflicts appear (name the types and the details)
6. Who is the protagonist?
7. Defend the position of the homeowners at the birthday party (their views)
8. Explain how the views of Mary differ (some implication is necessary here….brainstorm)
9. Brainstorm and come up with three possible outcomes for this situation (what will follow- how will the issue being addressed eventually resolve itself).
10. Why did the author pick this title?
11. What is the author’s theme? How does it tie in with the documentary we watched on human nature or reactions?
12. On an 11 by 17 sheet of paper, label and then create a plot line for this story. Be sure to be neat.

We will mark the questions I gave you yesterday on what an economic system is. I then Want to move on to what a market economy is (Capitalism). You are going to learn the essential features of this economic system (Supply and demand, individualism, incentive, private ownership) I will also be going over the history of Capitalism and providing you with information on Adam Smith. You will then be expected to read Chapter 8 of A Changing World and then do questions 13 to 17 and the following definitions for your cue cards:
Competition
Monopoly
private ownership
profit motive
"invisible hand"
Consumer sovereignty
Capitalism
supply and demand
individualism
private ownership
